Lee Brettin is a legal professional with a proven track record of 17 years practicing law and over 30 years of executive level experience in real estate transactions, management, development and brand building. Successful engagements include financial analysis, commercial sales, commercial lease negotiations, and real estate counseling to owners, developers and managers of real estate assets. His diversified experience includes private practice and in-house corporate counsel positions. For the past five years, I have focused my practice at Brettin Law Office on individuals and businesses in real estate transactions, business formation and management, franchise, and contract law. My real estate engagements have ranged from representing buyers and sellers of residences by-owner, to commercial leasing and sales. I have set up and assisted in the management of a number of growing businesses and franchises, and have represented clients in commercial contract formation, interpretation and disputes. Lee attended the evening law program at the University of Puget Sound (Seattle University). During law school, he worked full-time as Vice-President and Manager of the Seattle office of Newman Brettin Properties, a successful and highly regarded regional commercial real estate development company. Duties there included the management and leasing of a portfolio of first-class shopping centers totaling over 1.5 million square feet of gross leasable area. During this time, he negotiated over 100 retail and office leases, assignments, loans and security agreements for shopping center and office properties, including new construction and redevelopment projects. Upon completion of law school, Lee went into private practice with a focus on representing retail and franchise businesses in real estate transactions and commercial leasing. His practice involved negotiating and documenting complex commercial real estate transactions for clients in seven Western states. One of Lee's clients was Seattle Coffee Company (SCC), an emerging local coffee roasting, wholesale, retail and franchise operator and parent company of Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia Coffee. In 1996, he was asked to join SCC as General Counsel and Vice-President of Real Estate, where he gained extensive brand-building experience. While at SCC, he negotiated and drafted agreements for retail stores, field offices, and wholesale accounts nationally and in Canada, including real estate transactions, franchise compliance documents, territory development and single-unit franchise agreements, product development and licensing agreements. One particular corporate transaction included the site selection, leasing and development of a 120,000 square foot, multi-million dollar, built-to-suit corporate distribution center (currently Starbucks' Tukwila, Washington coffee roasting facility). Lee has also been involved in real estate site selection for a number of successful regional and national tenants, and the development and redevelopment of shopping centers and retail properties locally, including acquisition due diligence, title clearance, negotiating and drafting of easements, CC&Rs, and development and management agreements. As an experienced commercial real estate professional and lawyer, he has negotiated and documented the terms and conditions of investment property sales, escrow, contingencies, loan terms, national tenant credit leases, and buyer and seller obligations. Lee is a journeyman carpenter, with years of experience in custom home and commercial construction in the beach communities of Southern California, and a former member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners.
